Swadisthana Chakra

Swa (self) disthana (residence) is the second chakra, an orange ball of light located below the navel and above the pubic bone. After establishing connection with our physical body and having made it comfortable in the base chakra, we continue our journey with making our life fun and joy. As if building the house itself was Muladhara’s job; lighting up candles, hanging paintings and playing music in that house would be the domain of Swadisthana. This energetic center is all about feelings, sensuality, and sexuality. On the physical level it is connected to ovaries (reproductive system) and adrenal gland which in its turn is responsible for production of adrenalin and various hormones.
Motivations that drive us from this chakra are about having fun and enjoyment. People attracted to yoga from this chakra most likely will enjoy a free-style vinyasa class with a beautiful teacher and inspiring music playing during the class. This sort of class can offer playful, almost dance-like sequence of asanas in a tastefully decorated studio.
However, this energy can also become in excess and we may even start abusing: substances (food, alcohol or drugs) or people (manipulating with our sexual energy). When this chakra is being over-stimulated, we start exaggerating by being overly emotional and airy-fairy-love-and light spiritual, always with serene smile on our face. We become attached to this uplifted state of mind, things, people and relationships. But when this chakra is not nourished enough, we basically do not know how to open up to ourselves and others, and tend not to show our true emotions. I guess many royalties in the world have done their best to suppress this center for public life, which results in over-flow of this energy when the cameras are off.
When Swadisthana is balanced we feel free, in the flow and open. We are not afraid to express our feelings and emotions without overdoing it; we are healthily passionate about what we do and who we date.
It’s a very important part of our life - to enjoy. At times I see that some people take up the spiritual part too seriously, become too ascetic and restrict themselves in almost everything. I bet you have seen those yogis too – too serious, too dry, too boring to converse with. Therefore make sure to keep this center healthily nourished and be happy, healthy and strong!
