What is Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga? |
Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is a dynamic form of yoga that is practiced in set series six days a week (except full and new moon days and first three days of menstruation).
The word "asthanga" derives from the ancient script called "Yoga Sutras" which was written by the sage Patanjali. It means "eight-limbed path" that includes ethical norms (yamas), self-purification and study (niyamas), postures (asanas), breath control (pranayama), sense control (pratyahara), concentration (dharana), meditation (dhyana) and contemplation (samadhi). Vinyasa means breath-synchronization with the movement.
This method became famous in the west thanks to Guruji Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and now is being practiced world-wide. The traditional way to learn it is through classes called "Mysore style", when a student learns the sequences gradually and practices them under the supervision of the teacher. Experience of many teachers and practitioners of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga proves it to be a very effective method of establishing serious, regular and dedicated practice. This manifests due to the fact that you are doing it by yourself while being helped and guided. This way your practice always stays with you. As you do not merely repeat what the teacher shows you, but know exactly what to do by yourself. And it is great fun too, you will not get bored!
