One-on-one Yoga in Sydney

Madina's great passion is anatomy and correct alignment that involves using right muscles and limbs in order to perform a pose. She is committed to helping others to relax, find breath, joy and happiness in each pose.

She works with props (walls, bricks, blocks and straps) in order to help students to access the weak and "sleeping" areas of the body, while relaxing and letting go of the stiff or over-worked ones.

After each session, a feedback will be provided on the current situation and what will be the next area of attention.

Book one-on-one sessions in order to:

- work on correct alignment
- clarify issues with a certain pose, breath or an injury
- learn new more challenging poses
- have a unique and personalized approach to your practice
- progress faster under a personal and close guidance of a teacher
- receive hands-on adjustments from the teacher
- learn stretching and strengthening techniques for your specific body issues

Location: any location within half an hour travel from Sydney CBD

Ashtanga Yoga in Sydney

Namasté dear yogis,

I am happily settling down in Sydney and have some great ashtanga news!

Barefoot Yoga, the first donation-based yoga studio has opened its doors in November 2012. Starting from Monday, 26 November 2012 I am honored to be teaching led-ashtanga classes there.

Barefoot Yoga * T3 Verona Street, Paddington, Sydney

According to Crawf Weir, the owner and the motor (heart) behind Barefoot Yoga, this space used to be an ashtanga studio for 17 years and Sri K. Pattabhi Jois himself was teaching in it several times. The space is beautiful and is charged with energy of many committed and dedicated ashtangis that practiced within its walls.

And what I like most, is that we can create a Barefoot Yoga family there, and that it will be accessible for everyone as it is purely on donation. This makes me happy as for the first time I get to give real yoga classes!

Please bring a mat and a smile =)

Workshops in Eindhoven

This year yet another exciting event is going to take place in my dynamic life – we are moving to Australia!!! It has been a long time dream to live in a warm beautiful country with lots of sun, beach and nature. But before I leave, I decided to visit my lovely “vaderland” to see friends and also to teach a couple of workshops in Eindhoven, at "Pure Silence" studio.

PLEASE COME!!!

"Arm balances" workshop on Sunday, 14 October 2012 (10.00 - 12.30)

This workshop will take you through the theory and practice of various arm balances from bakasana, tithibasana, pincha mayurasana, hand stand etc.

To understand the arm balance we need to understand the notion of balance itself. Arm balances are literally about balancing and not only about building strength in arms, shoulders, etc. The strength actually comes from bandhas and the bravery to go passed the comfort limit that we set for ourselves. During the first part of the workshop we will be focusing on preparatory abdominal strength exercises and the theory of arm balances.

The second part will be about arm balances and how we should work our hands and forearms in combination with pelvis and legs. We will experience how the position of the shoulders and pelvis influences stability and how shifting the center of the gravity can influence various poses. Finally we will move into more of a playground set-up, where we will also learn how to fall safely out of a hand stand and fore-arm balance (pincha mayurasana).

Price: Euro 40,-

“Back bends” workshop on Sunday, 14 October 2012 (14.00 - 16.30)

It happens often enough that due to yoga practice we start experiencing discomfort and even pain in our lower back or sacrum. Since these areas are greatly involved in back-bends, it is very likely that their improper performance is the cause of the problem.

During this workshop we will take a close look at the main principles of happy back-bend performance:

- Correct position of hips/knees and shoulders/elbows

- Muscles involved in back-bends and exercises to develop their strength and flexibility

- Spine work

During first series of Ashtanga yoga the main back-bend, which we perform so many times during one session is upward facing dog (urdhva mukha svanasana). We will pay special attention to this pose, since its correct performance guarantees understanding of many others. Very often, this pose is overlooked as being “transitional” and bad habits developed during its performance. This causes problems in the second series, when we start learning intense back-bends.

We will also work through the back-bends of the second series so that everybody will learn the main principles of their performance (opening of chest and hip flexors, legs work etc.)  We will work in pairs in many poses, especially in kapotasana (pigeon pose) – a pose that is so hard to master for almost everybody.

Price: Euro 40,-

Both workshops paid in advance: Euro 70,-

Yoga for Volleyball team

US Volleyball Amsterdam

In May 2011 I was approached by Kamal Hammoutène, a coach of the female D2 team at “US Volleybal Amsterdam”. Having tried Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga with UK teacher Scott Johnson, Kamal was assured it to be of a helpful tool to his team’s training.

There were two aspects, which were of a particular interest to Kamal:
- Physical: working on flexibility and core strength to aid serving the ball, jumping and diving down to get the ball
- Mental: developing an ability to quickly gain a level of relaxation, awareness and centeredness during the game We have agreed on weekly Ashtanga Yoga sessions, which would be at the end of the girls’ volleyball training. On my first day I purposely arrived slightly earlier to watch the future team I was to work with. They girls were young, mostly in their twenties, very energetic, driven and strong. The training was intense; girls were running and jumping around, shouting out their team cheers.

"Lift light, jump high" workshop

Dynamic nature, vinyasa and transitions between the poses make ashtanga practice graceful, strong and beautiful. This workshop will be dedicated to "jump back" and "jump through" techniques, that seem to be very challenging and almost impossible for ladies.
